Unlike most supplements that are limited to oral and topical use, there are a number of different ways to use CBD oil and CBD-infused products. That is, aside from simply sending it down the hatch.
If you’ve been enjoying the benefits of CBD oil for a while, then you’ve likely settled into a method that works for you. But for those of you who are new to CBD, we thought we’d give you a quick overview of the various delivery methods available and the mechanics of using them.
Although there are some other, more rare items, such as patches and inhalers and whatnot, in this post we’re going to cover the most common categories of products.
You might think there’s not a lot of difference between products in similar categories, but there are important distinctions that help you get the results you’re hoping for. Knowing these details can help you get more for your money.
Let’s get right down to it.
How to take CBD oil drops
CBD oil drops come in a wide variety of formulations. These range from oils infused with purified CBD to raw hemp extract which provides the full-spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes found in the original hemp plant. You might be better served using a full-spectrum product or a CBD-infused product or something in between. First, it’s important to do your homework to decide which product is right for you and what the correct serving size is for your needs.
Once you’ve made your choice, you have some options for how to take it.
Sublingual (under the tongue) — Sublingual drops and tinctures are absorbed into the bloodstream via the capillaries in the tissue in your mouth. One of the benefits of this method is that it provides a relatively speedy onset time compared to, say, baked goods with CBD, which take longer to take effect. To take sublingual drops, simply put the recommended number of drops under your tongue and let it soak in for a couple of minutes.
Oral (down the hatch) — If your intention is to deliver CBD to your throat, you can simply tilt your head back and drip the oil directly down your pie pipe.
Add to liquids — If you want to deliver CBD oil to the stomach, then adding it to a liquid might be your best bet as it’s less likely to be absorbed into the tissues of your throat. This will have a faster onset time than taking CBD with solid food.
Add to food - If you want to deliver your CBD to your intestines, the best option is to add it to or take it with good, solid food — like a full meal as opposed to a piece of fruit. CBD taken with solid food takes a little longer to take effect. Here are some tasty CBD recipes to quench your thirst and satisfy your appetite!
How to use CBD capsules
CBD oil capsules and pills are similar to drops but don’t really offer a sublingual option unless you pull them apart. However, the oil in some capsules might not taste very good, especially if it is a full-spectrum product. If you want to deliver the contents to your stomach or feel the effects more quickly, take them on an empty tummy. A capsule made of gelatin will dissolve quickly. And if you want to deliver the CBD to your intestines take your CBD capsules with a meal.
How to use CBD-infused edibles
Although the term “CBD edibles” has become part of the American consciousness lately, what’s not so obvious is that different types of edibles can work in different ways. This should be becoming a familiar theme by now, but how you use edibles depends on where you want it to be absorbed and/or how fast you want it to take effect.
As with oils, edibles products range from full-spectrum to pure CBD-infused.
How to use CBD gummies, candy, and drinks
CBD gummy candy, hard candies, chocolates, drinks, etc. act pretty much the same as a capsule. The candy melts quickly in an empty stomach. Drinking a little water speeds up the process. If you want to leave it there, take it without food. If you’re trying to work it further down into the intestines take it with a meal.
How to use CBD-infused foods
CBD-infused foods such as baked goods take longer to digest than candy and capsules thus allowing the CBD to work its way through the digestive system. I think you get that by now. But this is a delicious way to get your daily dose of CBD, and we’ve cooked up some sweet recipes to help you along the way.
How to use CBD skin creams
There are a number of different formulations of CBD skin creams, but they can be looked at as having two intentions.
Absorbed into the skin — Some CBD skin cream formulas are made to deliver CBD to the skin, itself. These can be broken down further into balms, salves, lotions, and so on which are made for particular purposes. Simply apply these products in the recommended amounts directly to your skin. You can also use some CBD oils directly on the skin as well as add them to your own skin-care products.
Penetrating into muscles and joints — For athletes, fitness buffs, sports enthusiasts, and hard workin’ folks, a penetrating cream is recommended. These products are generally formulated with products such as eucalyptus oil and menthol which helps to increase blood flow and cool and soothe the affected areas.
How to use CBD bath bombs and salts
Similar to CBD skin creams, CBD bath products are typically meant to pamper the skin and help you relax. The difference, of course, is that a bath product can cover the entire body rather than just patches of skin. These products are often infused with essential oils such as lavender or tea tree oil. Bath salts are essentially Epsom salts that have been infused with CBD and essential oils, while bath bombs are typically made with things like calcium carbonate (baking soda) which dissolves quickly in water. There’s not much mystery to how to use these products. Simply add them to your bath in the recommended amounts and enjoy.
How to vape CBD
The benefit of vaping CBD is that it takes effect almost instantly. The CBD is turned into a vapor and absorbed directly into the bloodstream via the lungs. For simplicity's sake, you can purchase disposable vape pens. And if you’re a tinkerer that would like to create your own vape oil formula and use your own preferred vaping device, there is a wide variety of CBD vape oils to choose from. We suggest you heed the instructions of the device that you intend to use when vaping.
How to dab with CBD
Diamond CBD offers a variety of CBD dabs. These are purified CBD products suitable for dabbing. Dabbing is similar to vaporizing but uses a more complicated rig and process. We’re not going to get into the mechanics of this here. Again, refer to the instructions that came with your vape rig. The thing with dabbing is that it can deliver a lot of CBD in a short amount of time.
How to use CBD-infused smokables
Finally, today, we’ll mention CBD-infused smokables such as pre-rolls and dry bud. Those who are into smoking their herbs probably don’t need to be instructed on how to use these products. And if you’re not already into smoking, we suggest that you give some of these other products a try first.
