Is CBD Good for Hangovers?

Posted on September 18, 2017

Had a little too much to drink last night? CBD may be just what you need to take care of that maddening headache and severe nausea. And here’s a huge bonus: it might even help you to kill fewer brain cells. Sound too good to be true? Read on.

We hate to have to break it to you, but it’s not just the headache and nausea you have to worry about. Alcohol is literally poisonous to the human body. Too much of it can cause toxic effects that not only make your head pound and the room spin but can also permanently harm your brain and liver - especially in heavy drinkers. There’s a long and dirty laundry list of bad things that alcohol does to your body, but most importantly, your brain and liver aren’t organs you want to gamble with. (One of our grandmothers used to say, “do anything you want, just leave your brain alone.”)

Alcohol Toxicity and CBD

A few years back, a study done at the University of Kentucky attempted to determine whether or not CBD might mitigate the toxic effects of alcohol. Unfortunately for the rats who were tested, the scientists gave them enough alcohol to cause life-threatening seizures due to severe neurodegeneration - the technical term for killing brain cells.

Fortunately for some of the rats though, the researchers administered CBD transdermally - that means they applied it to the rats’ skin. What they found was that transdermal CBD treatment reduced neurodegeneration by almost 50%. In other words, the rats that got the CBD lost half as many brain cells!

For the brain surgeons out there, the title of the final report says it all: “Transdermal delivery of cannabidiol attenuates binge alcohol-induced neurodegeneration in a rodent model of an alcohol use disorder.”

On a similar note, investigators at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Institute of Biological Sciences induced cocaine toxicity in mice to see if CBD could have the same protective effects. Researchers concluded"...treatment with phytocannabinoid CBD abolished cocaine-induced acute seizures in mice, indicating anticonvulsant effect, in parallel with anti-inflammatory effect and protection against liver injury." So it didn’t just reduce seizures, it “abolished” them. That’s pretty amazing stuff.

If the studies above are any indication of the benefit that CBD could have on human brains and livers, that means CBD could be a great way to reduce the damage caused by drinking.

Now back to that hangover...

Aside from causing brain and liver damage, drinking too much alcohol leads to dehydration and low blood sugar, both of which are more likely the causes of that pounding headache. So, next time you have a hangover, drink a big glass of water and enjoy some Diamond CBD gummies to put something in your stomach and get your blood sugar back up. You might just feel better in no time.
