CBD Shows Potential in Treating Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. In fact, it’s the 6th leading cause of death in the US. The disease takes more lives than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. An estimated 5.5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and as of now, there is no cure.
Alzheimer’s results in loss of memory and other cognitive abilities and can interfere with daily life. Symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.
Although the greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is age, Alzheimer's is not a normal part of aging. In fact, approximately 200,000 Americans under the age of 65 have younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease (also known as early-onset Alzheimer’s).
Today, there is a worldwide effort under way to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset, and prevent it from developing. Currently, scientific research is ongoing to investigate the therapeutic potential of CBD as a 100% natural treatment for Alzheimer’s disease without harmful side effects. Preliminary results are promising.
CBD has been shown to possess neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in the lab. These properties suggest that the compound could be therapeutically beneficial for reducing or even inhibiting the cognitive and functional impairment that occurs with Alzheimer’s disease. Findings also indicate that CBD promotes neurogenesis, or the growth and development of neurons, slowing the deterioration of cognitive functions.
In one study done on mice with injection-induced Alzheimer’s disease, three weeks of daily CBD treatments was effective at reversing the cognitive deficits. Another found that eight months of CBD treatments helped prevent the development of social recognition memory deficits.
“The studies discussed here provide promising preliminary data and the translation of this preclinical work into the clinical setting could be realized relatively quickly: CBD is readily available, appears to only have limited side effects and is safe for human use.”

Alzheimer's is a serious and life-threatening disease that requires professional medical attention. But these and other studies show that a lot can be done just by tapping into the health benefits program offered by Mother Nature.
