CBD and The Bliss Molecule, Taking The Edge Off Life
Serotonin, AKA, “The Bliss Molecule.” It’s renowned for its ability to bring serenity to our otherwise harried existence. When the going gets tough, the tough get doing, as they say. But when things settle down, the human body needs a way to chill out.
Serotonin is the proverbial “chill pill.” It’s a hormone that the human body produces naturally. However, its production can be stimulated with dietary supplementation. And CBD may just do the trick.
How do hormones work?
The human body is astoundingly complex. There is a myriad of systems acting within us which require regulation. Have you ever wondered how it is that all the cells in the body know what’s going on with all the other cells? It is achieved through a system of signaling molecules and receptors.
The human central nervous system and brain monitor the myriad functions going on in your body at all times. When the brain senses a need for the bodily systems to change what they’re doing in response to certain states, it floods the body with signaling hormones. Hormones are molecules which fit into microscopic receptors on cells triggering the cell to modulate its activity.
For example, you may have heard the term “fight or flight” in connection with potentially life-threatening situations. When your brain decides that you are in danger, it floods your body with a host of hormones including adrenaline to prepare the body to ramp up metabolism very quickly in order to allow you to confront the danger or to flee the situation altogether - hence, fight or flight. There is also a third option - freeze - to remain undetected or “play dead” if the brain determines that is the best course of action. In this case, it releases hormones which will literally paralyze you temporarily (also known as being “petrified”).
When this kind of thing happens, the effects are extremely obvious. But there are other more subtle and less noticeable activities going on at the cellular level that are just as important, if not more so.
What is the connection between CBD and serotonin?
The body goes through many cycles each day, such as alertness and relaxation periods. When your body needs rest, it will produce hormones such as melatoninwhich will signal your body to begin shutting down and preparing for sleep. And in the morning, the body produces a hormone called orexin which increases the appetite while also increasing alertness and energy levels.
So how does CBD fit into all this? As it turns out, CBD can mimic the functions of certain hormones and act as a signaling molecule, effectively modulating bodily functions.
The most well-known of these effects is the modulation of the production of serotonin - The Bliss Molecule. When your brain decides it’s time to chill out after dealing with stress all day, it produces a molecule called anandamide which in turn signals your body to produce serotonin. CBD, as it turns out, mimics the effects of anandamide and also increases serotonin levels in the brain.
In today’s world, very little of the stress we have to deal with is life-threatening. However, our bodies evolved in a world where just about any threat could have the potential to be life-threatening. Therefore the body reacts to any kind of stress by reducing hormones that cause relaxation and increasing hormones such as adrenaline which causes alertness and muscle tension. The vast majority of the stress in our modern lives, albeit annoying, is not life-threatening. But modern science provides us with ways to voluntarily modulate these systems.
By far, the most common reason people give for using CBD is to reduce anxiety and improve mood. CBD’s ability to mimic anandamide and increase levels of serotonin is believed by researchers to be responsible for this effect.
